Many of the Hebe varieties which are listed in these pages have been selected or introduced by Lowaters Nursery, over the years we have looked for key areas of improvement within the Genus. Hebe rakiensis is a native New Zealand variety named after the Rakaia valley where it was first collected. A spreading shrub with a dense tidy habit and light green leaves. In June and July racemes up to 4cm in length of pure white flowers are produced in large numbers.
Hebe diosmifolia Wairua Beauty is a compact multi-branched shrub which forms a tidy mound of pale lime green leaves which are small and narrow. In June and July (for 4 weeks) a mass of heliotrope mauve flowers are produced in corymbs at the ends of shoots, these are larger than the species. The plant was discovered as a sport of the species in Wairua in New Zealand hence the name.
